MESSAGE FROM MRS COLLINS

25 Years of Service to Sandfield School!

Congratulations to Mrs Donnithorne as she celebrates 25 years working at Sandfield!

This is an incredible achievement.  Over the years, Mrs Donnithorne has seen many changes and worked with many children and staff.  However, one thing that always remains constant is that Sandfield has a special place in her heart.  We thank Mrs Donnithorne for all her hard work, dedication and commitment to the school.  She always strives to go above and beyond and we appreciate all the big and little things that she does for us all.

We all hope that Mrs Donnithorne enjoys her special day.

Year 5 & 6 Football Team

Yesterday the Sandfield Year 5 & 6 football team competed against 12 other Guildford schools in the Danone Football Tournament.

It was a very competitive tournament and our football team played with courage, skill, showing great teamwork and resilience.  We were proud of every single member of the team.  There were some amazing runs up the wings, fantastic goal scoring and great saves.  The team captain, Will, did a brilliant job as Captain, organising the team, making sure they were all in space. The team came fourth overall and they are already looking forward to the next match.

A big thank you to Coach Mohammed, who enthuses and trains the team so well and to all the parents who came along to support.  A great effort!

Wishing you all a great weekend!

Kind regards
Mrs Collins and The Sandfield Team

ATTENDANCE THIS WEEK

Attendance Policy Reminder

Please can we remind parents that the school must be notified by 9.15am each day that a child is absent as per the attendance policy. If a call is not received and we are unable to make contact with you further steps to investigate can be taken and could result in a home visit from the school or the police. We need to make sure everyone is safe.

Children in all year groups need to be signed in and out of the school via the school office if they are leaving during the school day, by an adult. Children must not be left at the school gates to come in on their own during the school day, this includes if they are late to school.

Medical appointments should be made outside of school hours for routine dentist and doctor appointments wherever possible. For any medical / well-being appointments during school hours a StudyBugs message can be accepted in advance. Evidence of the appointment will still need to be provided via email (parents@sandfield.surrey.sch.uk).

A StudyBugs message can also be used for secondary visit absences.

An Application for Leave of Absence in Exceptional Circumstances should be completed for any absence, other than illness. This should be done online via the form on the parent page of the school website. This must be done in advance of the requested absence allowing time for an electronic response by the Headteacher. Leave of absence is not authorised during examination periods or at the beginning or end of terms.

Punctuality to school is crucial and for registration at the beginning of the day. Lateness into school causes disruption to that individual’s learning and to that of the other pupils in the class. It is paramount therefore that all pupils arrive at school on time. The school gates are open from 8.35 to 8.45am and registration takes place as children arrive and up to 8.50am. Pupils who arrive after this time will be recorded as late to school and receive a late mark in the register. Registers close at 9.05am and after this time lateness is recorded as an unauthorised absence and a missed session. Persistent lateness of a pupil will be referred to the Home School Link Worker and/or the Local Authority Inclusion Officer and can be subject to penalty notices.

We appreciate that unavoidable circumstances can happen and that this would mean a child being late into school. If there are exceptional circumstances which mean your child is going to be frequently late then this needs to be discussed with the Headteacher. Thanks for your support.

Just to remind parents that if they take their children out of school without authority for 5 or more days (which do not need to be consecutive), they will be liable to receive a penalty notice. Currently the amount payable under a penalty notice is £60.00 per parent per child if paid within 21 days.  Thereafter the amount increases to £120.00 if paid between 21 and 28 days. If the penalty notice remains unpaid after 28 days, the Local Authority will consider a prosecution in the Magistrates Court. Please note that penalty notices are issued per parent per child so a family of two parents and two children will receive 4 penalty notices.

Please refer to the full attendance policy if you would like any further clarification of the above which can be found on the school website.

The school target for this year 2022-2023 has been set by the Surrey County Council Inclusion Team and is 97%

This week the whole school achieved 96.2%.

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOMS

RECEPTION CLASS

First week back has been fantastic for Reception! We delve deep into our book, Funny Bones, which ran throughout all of our areas in the classroom. We re-enacted the story in our small world area and had to put the skeleton’s bones back together again using the song from the book to help us! In the afternoons, we tried out different percussion instruments to tap, rattle, drum and shake along to the skeleton song as well! In art, we made our own little skeletons using cotton buds and loads of slimy pva glue.

In literacy, we discussed the main characters and settings and we used our phonics sounds to try to spell out CVC words, using picture/ word mats to help us.

We made a variety of potions in the water area, mixing different coloured water and other gruesome ingredients to make the ultimate concoction.

As part of our autumn theme, we investigated the anatomy of pumpkins! We looked closely at the skin, pulp, seeds, size and variety of pumpkins throughout the week. We got stuck in with our senses of touch, sight, smell and even taste.

REMINDER: P.E days for Reception Class is Friday.

A great start to the new term this week, as children all returned enthusiastic to learn again after their holiday.

In Science this week, Year 1 have been looking at animal groups and are fascinated to learn about all the features of amphibians! In Year 2 we have been doing some science experiments inspired by our topic of Alice in Wonderland. Well done Year 1 and Year 2.

Reminder: PE days for Year 1 is Monday and Year 2 is Tuesday.

YEAR 3 & YEAR 4

The children in Year 3 and Year 4 came back raring to go and we have been impressed with how quickly they have settled after their half term break!

This week we have finished writing diary entries written as Cinnamon from the book we’ve been using and have looked at alphabetical order to help find words in a dictionary.

In DT we have started a new project to design and create a pencil case or purse with a paisley pattern.  Do you like our tiger sketches and poems from last half term?

Reminders: PE on Wednesday (outside) & Thursday indoors (shorts and t-shirts will also be needed)

Year 4 String Scheme takes place every Friday, please ensure all instruments are in school.

YEAR 5 & YEAR 6

We are completing our topic ‘Big Write’ this week on the controversial, historical figure Edward Colston. We’ve written a newspaper article outlining the events surrounding the vandalism and destruction of his statue in Bristol.  Our background research has shown that he was heavily linked to the slave trade from Africa to America via Bristol. The children have really enjoyed being news reporters for the week!

REMINDER: P.E. days for Year 5 is Tuesday and Wednesday and Year 6 is Tuesday & Thursday.
