MESSAGE FROM MRS COLLINS

Sandfield School Community Remembers

Each year, Sandfield marks 11th November with a special Remembrance Assembly to show that we do think about the ultimate sacrifice that so many people made, and continue to make.

Every child made a poppy to place on our centerpiece. Children from across the school read powerful verses from well-known war poets and read the lyrics from songs reflecting life during wartime. Special thanks to Mrs Mason for organising this very reflective assembly.

Green Screen Project and Air Pollution Survey

At Sandfield, we work very closely with the Global Centre for Clean Air Research (GCARE), based at Surrey University.  We are currently working together to apply for a grant to fund our Green Wall Project.  The aim is to build a green wall around the perimeter of Sandfield.  This green wall will act as a barrier to air pollution, therefore improving the air quality within our school.

A big thank you to Waitrose for giving us a cheque for £750 towards this environmental project.  All donations are so very greatly received.

The Eco team with Mrs Grant are also getting involved to drive this project forward, working with RotaKids to support funding for our Green Wall.

As part of this project, please can parents share their views about air pollution and its exposure to children.  The survey will take less than 5 minutes to complete and to complete this short survey, please click here>> Thank you very much.

Wishing you all a great weekend!

Best wishes
Mrs Collins and The Sandfield Team

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOMS

RECEPTION CLASS

This week, Reception Class dove deeply into The Gingerbread Man. The warm scent of spices filled the classroom as the children explored cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, star anise, nutmeg and clove. We had to chance to look at some different countries on our map and talked about where our spices came from. We used scented playdough and gingerbread dough to role-play working at the Bakery outside. Some of us acted out the story using puppets too!

In English, the children used their phonics knowledge to label the characters from the story. We warmed up with our speed sounds and got busy verbally segmenting, then blending 3 letter words from the story. The children gave their best effort to do this independently using sound mats to help. They were very proud!

For Remembrance Day, the children have been busy collaging red and purple poppies. We spoke about major events from the past and how they are still remembered today. We discussed the meaning of poppies and The Last Post and considered why it is important to remember those who fought in the war.

REMINDER: P.E days for Reception Class is Friday.

YEAR 1 & YEAR 2

Another industrious week in KS1!  Please look out for our fantastic writing which will be on Seesaw at the end of the week-very exciting.

In Year 2 we have continued with amazing maths, we have been doing more subtraction . This week we have been concentrating on subtraction of 2-digit numbers from 2-digit numbers… what budding mathematicians they are!

In Year 1, in PSHE we have been learning about relationships and they have been creating a picture of themselves and their friends around them. They have also been learning about the importance of different relationships.

Reminder: PE days for Year 1 is Monday and Year 2 is Tuesday.

YEAR 3 & YEAR 4

There has been lots of activity in Year 3 and Year 4 this week! We have been exploring parts of real plants and discovering that each part has an important function. Investigating this further, our budding scientists have been using celery, food colouring and water to see how water is transported in plants. We can’t wait to see the results!

November focuses our minds on Remembrance Day and the significance of poppies. Both year groups have been learning about the different colour poppies people can choose to wear and have been creating their own for our school service on Friday.

Fantastic work everyone!

Reminders: PE on Wednesday (outside) & Thursday indoors (shorts and t-shirts will also be needed)

Year 4 String Scheme takes place every Friday, please ensure all instruments are in school.

YEAR 5 & YEAR 6

We are completing our topic ‘Big Write’ this week on the controversial, historical figure Edward Colston. We’ve written a newspaper article outlining the events surrounding the vandalism and destruction of his statue in Bristol.  Our background research has shown that he was heavily linked to the slave trade from Africa to America via Bristol. The children have really enjoyed being news reporters for the week!

REMINDER: P.E. days for Year 5 is Tuesday and Wednesday and Year 6 is Tuesday & Thursday.
