MESSAGE FROM MRS COLLINS

Sandfield’s Green Wall Project

As you are aware, Sandfield Primary School has teamed up with Surrey’s Global Centre for Clean Air Research (GCARE) at the University of Surrey, Guildford Living Lab and Zero Carbon, to create the CoGreen project.  We were fortunate to win funding from Reclaim Network Plus to build a green wall around Sandfield, which will improve the air quality within the school site.

Researchers will then investigate how this structure will impact air pollution, noise levels and air temperature in the playground and classrooms, and how it affects biodiversity and wellbeing in and around the school. This will provide the RECLAIM Network with vital data on the benefits of this type of nature-based intervention, combined with the voices of children, families and the local community.

We have recently had two companies that have visited our school to give their ideas on how we could build our green wall.  We are currently in the process of deciding which options would be best for Sandfield.  The aim would be to start the building phase as soon as we can, so we can maximise on the spring weather.

Sandfield’s Green Wall project was featured on BBC Surrey’s morning radio show with Nicky Patrick last Saturday.  Please click the button below to listen to the interview and find out more about this exciting project!

May I take this opportunity to wish you all a wonderful half term.

We look forward to seeing you back in school on Monday 20th February 2023.

Best wishes
Mrs Collins and The Sandfield Team

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOMS

RECEPTION CLASS

Love was in the air this week in Reception, with our early Valentine’s Day celebrations. With our theme of love, kindness and friendship, we spent the week reflecting our feelings and our actions towards others. In English, we used our sounds to write kind notes to each other and delivered them. We even had children giving each other roses during playtime. Our children made a class ‘kindness potion’ in circle time and discussed how to be kind and why kindness matters.

The most popular areas this week were the home corner and water area. In our cosy home corner, the children had many tea parties and candlelit dinners together; the tea was flowing and new friendships were formed. Our water tray turned into a love potion factory then into a perfumery. The children made scented concoctions with citrus fruits, rose petals and floral tea leaves.

YEAR 1 & YEAR 2

Year 1 and Year 2 have had a wonderful week learning how to code, programme and debug floor robots.

They created their own routes and thought of obstacles for the Bee-Bots to move around. They also wrote their own algorithms for the robot to follow. We are really proud of all the children and their super coding skills! We definitely have some future coders in KS1.

REMINDER: P.E days for Year 1 is  Monday and Year 2 is Tuesday.

YEAR 3 & YEAR 4

We’re finally at the end of another busy half term!

We have been having fun measuring in Maths and have been converting millimeters, centimeters and meters. Year 3 had fun on the playground measuring how tall we are and seeing if there is a correlation between height and shoe size. Over the half term break, you could practice measuring items in your home.

In PSHE we have looked at how to stay safe when taking medicines and made posters giving advice on only taking medicine from a trusted adult and how it must be the correct dosage.

Reminders: PE on Wednesday (outside) & Thursday indoors (shorts and t-shirts will also be needed)

Year 4 String Scheme takes place every Friday, please ensure all instruments are in school.

YEAR 5 & YEAR 6

Year 5 and Year 6 have had a fantastic time in Science this week!

We have been experimenting with different mixtures, compounds, solutions and the different ways we might be able to separate them (or not).  We have also been doing some hands-on investigations to explore reversible/irreversible changes.  Ask your children what happened when we left the coins in a petri dish of coke… Or how warm milk and vinegar react together…. Or whether melting chocolate is reversible… Or why making toast is irreversible.

Such fun!

REMINDER: P.E. days for Year 5 is Tuesday and Wednesday and Year 6 is Tuesday & Thursday.
