Curriculum Meetings

A big thank you to all the parents who attend our phase group curriculum meetings last week.  We had over 70 parents and carers that came along, which is fantastic.  The staff really enjoyed this opportunity of getting to know all the new families in their class and phase group.

For those families that were unable to attend please link on this link to our website , where you will find all the information shared for each phase group.

Year 5 & Year 6 Cross Country Squad

On Thursday 22nd September our valiant cross country squad competed for the first time this year.

We had 19 girls and boys represent Sandfield, which is an excellent effort.  Cross-country running is not for the faint-hearted.  It is incredibly challenging and very physical.  The course included a very steep hill, lots of brambles and lots of children all vying for position.  We are so proud of every child who participated, some for the first time.  Each team member gave it their all, and showed great resilience and determination to finish the race.

Well done to you all.  For the first time, we had two children that finished in the top ten, which is an incredible achievement in a line-up of 140 runners. As a special reward, the Cross Country Team had extra break time – which was thoroughly deserved.

Wishing you a lovely weekend!

Mrs Collins and the Sandfield staff team

Children in Celebration Assembly this week were:

This week the whole school achieved 97.5%

Dear Parent/Carer

We are aware that the pandemic has had an effect on families, but the expectation is still that every child should now be attending school full time. If you consider that there are exceptional circumstances relating to your request, please let the school have full details. Each application for a leave of absence will be considered on a case by case basis.

Penalty Notices to Address Poor Attendance at School A Penalty Notice may be issued as an alternative to the prosecution of a parent/carer for their child’s unauthorised absence from school (absence without the agreement of the school or not covered by a medical note) and will be used by Surrey County Council in the following circumstances :-

  1. Pupils identified by police and Inclusion Officers (formerly Education Welfare Officers) engaged on Truancy Patrols and who have incurred unauthorised absences.
  2. Leave of absence in term time (5 days or 10 sessions or more).
  • Please be aware that The Education (Pupil Registration)(England)(Amendment) Regulations 2013, which became law on 1st September 2013 state that Headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances.
  • The Headteacher is also required to determine the number of school days a child can be away from school if leave is granted.
  • In such cases the Headteacher/Governing Body must decide whether there are exceptional circumstances. They may request that the Local Authority issue Penalty Notices when the absence is not authorised.

Warnings will not be given where it can be shown that parents have been notified that such absences will not be authorised.

  1. Finally, the issuing of a Penalty Notice will also be considered where it is judged that a parent is failing to ensure their child’s regular school attendance.

This will be considered when a pupil has incurred 7 or more unauthorised sessions in the previous 6 school weeks, which may include a pupil arriving late after close of registration.

If you believe at any stage that your child’s absence from school may leave you liable to receive a Penalty Notice, it is extremely important that you act without delay to secure their regular attendance.

If you have any questions or require further support to achieve an improvement in your child’s attendance, please contact your child’s school or the Inclusion Officer.

Penalty Notice relating to Exclusions

If a child is excluded from school, Section 103 of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 places a duty on parents/carers to ensure that their child is not in a public place without justifiable cause during school hours.

This duty applies to the first five days of each exclusion.  Failure to do so will render the parent/carer liable to a Penalty Notice. (Alternative education provision will be made available from the sixth day of any exclusion.)

Amount Payable for a Penalty Notice

The amount payable for a Penalty Notice issued in any of the above circumstances is currently £60 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the Notice, rising to £120 if paid after 21 days but within 28 days.

If the Penalty Notice is not paid, the local Authority must consider a prosecution in the Magistrates Court for the offence for which the Notice was originally issued.

Please be aware that each parent is liable to receive a Penalty Notice for each child who incurs unauthorised absences, for example, if there are two parents and one child, each parent will receive one Penalty Notice.

If there are two parents, and two children incur unauthorised absences, each parent will receive two Penalty Notices, which in this case would amount to £120 each if paid within 21 days.

Advice and support is available from an Inclusion Officer by contacting your local Education Office as follows:-

REMINDER – Car Free Day
Guildford Borough Council is hosting a Car Free Day on Sunday 25th September.  For further information and road closures please click here>>

This week, Reception has done brilliantly at remembering their rules and routines from last week! They came back fresh and ready to tackle a new week of learning.

We explored ‘Glorious Guildford’ in our construction areas. We used a variety of building pieces to recreate familiar places such as the Castle, the Spectrum and Guildford High Street-lined with people from all walks of life.

In our small world area, we had a construction site and used our imagination to act out different building work scenarios.

We got busy with our fingers to practise our letter formations with wands in the magic dust. Then, sifted through letters to find and order the ones in our names onto train tracks!

Equipped with magnifying glasses, used our senses to explore a sensory tray full of Autumn leaves, seeds, bark and flowers. We spoke to each other and described how they felt using sensory adjectives such as rough, smooth, prickly, bumpy, squashy and soft. We even found a little spider friend in there one morning!

In art, we used mirrors to look closely at our faces. Using adjectives, we spoke about our individual features and then carefully painted self-portraits. We made sure to paint so accurately that others could guess whose face it was just from looking at the portraits.  We also designed and collaged hot air balloons after reading Dr.Seuss’ “Oh The Places You’ll Go!” to get ready for next week’s theme.

REMINDER: P.E days for Reception Class is Friday.

This week, the children in Year 1 & Year 2 read ‘Avocado Babies’ by John Burningham who was a local Guildford author.
All the children brought in a baby photo from home and they worked together to play guess the baby.  The children noticed how some of them had changed over time and how some children looked exactly the same!  We have been practising labelling key features of their baby photos with children in Year 2 writing full sentences, using capital letters and full stops, to describe what they looked like as a baby!
Reminder: PE days for Year 1 is Monday and Year 2 is Tuesday.

Year 3 and Year 4 had a wonderful day yesterday taking part in a variety of activities linked to India for our WOW day. We all had a chance to cook and taste a spiced potato dish as well as doing a yoga session in PE. Did you know yoga is believed to have originated in India about 5,000 years ago?

Other activities included hand printing peacocks, doing rangoli chalk patterns on the playground and designing henna hands.

Reminders: Please note PE on Wednesday (joggers and hoodies) and indoor PE on Thursday (shorts and t-shirts).

Year 4 String Scheme takes place every Friday (please see the calendar on our website for exact dates), please ensure all instruments are in school.

Year 5 and Year 6 have been extending out their pirates topic this week!  We are halfway through designing and making our Jolly Roger flags with PVA glue and acrylic paint.

The children are also enjoying creating and singing their own sea shanties to perform as part of their music curriculum.  Treasure Island is a classic text so we are learning how the different layers of society spoke in Olde England Bristol.

REMINDER: P.E. days for Year 5 is Tuesday and Wednesday and Year 6 is Tuesday & Thursday.
