Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)
At Sandfield, we are fortunate to have a school filled with children and families who speak 37 different languages. Understanding cultures and valuing the ability to communicate in other languages are key skills to becoming empathetic, global-minded citizens of the future. Learning a language helps children to build resilience, confidence and make connections with cognates which expands their vocabulary and knowledge.
As a school, we are really proud of the standard of French that our children achieve when they leave at the end of KS2. We believe that this is due to Year 3 and 4 following a recognised scheme of work (Kapow) to provide a solid foundation in all areas of the national curriculum for MFL coupled with Years 5 and 6 being taught by a specialist native-French teacher (from the Royal Grammar School, Guildford).
French is taught once a week from Year 3 to Year 6 (inclusive) and the children are taught the main skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking along with pronunciation through phonics. Knowledge of grammar and vocabulary are built progressively through everyday topics including food and drink, greetings, numbers and the weather.
At Sandfield, every child has access to an iPad which allows the teaching and assessment of French to be bespoke and provide accessibility to all our learners. Children enjoy recording their French speaking on their iPads, listening to French sent via links or games and completing tasks on their iPads using the variety of tools available to them.
