MESSAGE FROM MRS COLLINS

Happy New Year to you all!

I hope that you all had a good holiday. It is great to see everyone back with smiles on their faces, despite all the rain! Please watch the forecast for next week as we are predicted some snow and sleet!  Soon it will be Spring and we will welcome the warmer, drier weather.

PTA News

This week Miss McIllroy and I met up with a few members of the PTA.  Many thanks to all those who attended this meeting.  The PTA treasurer shared the good news that so far this year £7,800 pounds have been raised, from the Comedy Bingo Night, Winter Fair and sale of Christmas cards and tea towels.  This is fantastic.  Thank you so much to all the PTA members and staff who have got involved in helping at these events and also to our school community for getting involved in them.

This funding will be spent on £2000 enrichment for our curriculum.  Each phase group will receive £500 to spend on a curriculum activity for their children, £2000 to be spent on new books for the library and finally £4000 towards the new set of 30 iPads in Year 3 and Year 4.  It is amazing that we are so close to achieving this year’s fundraising goal!

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOMS

RECEPTION CLASS

First full week in Reception has been busy and eventful!

We rang in the New Year learning about winter and travelled the length of the globe to explore the Polar Regions. As global explorers at a Base Camp (our role-play area), the children investigated non-fiction texts and information sources such as maps, globes and fact files. They had the best time exploring items like compasses, telescopes, binoculars and walkie-talkies as a part of their imaginative play.

In literacy, we learned about caribou, penguins, polar bears and whales. We discussed these polar animals’ behavior, diet and habitat, using scientific vocabulary. Then, the children labelled parts of their bodies after discussing how these special body parts kept the polar animals warm in their habitats. We also reflected on how we humans keep warm and dressed ourselves up in winter gear in Art.

YEAR 1 & YEAR 2

We have had a fantastic first full week back!  This week in Maths, Year 1 have been investigating numbers from 10 to 20, using a variety of manipulatives and playing games. In Year 2 we have been learning all about money, and how to make different amounts using a variety of coins and notes, which they have so enjoyed.
Well done Year 1 and Year 2!

REMINDER: P.E days for Year 1 is  Monday and Year 2 is Tuesday.

YEAR 3 & YEAR 4

Year 3 and 4 have started an Art unit on Surrealist paintings. We looked at artwork by Dali; our favourite was his Book of Birds where the pages of a book fly off as seagulls. We explored how to mix different colours by painting a colour wheel and learning what tertiary colours are (we already knew what primary and secondary colours were).

In English we have read a new book to inform our writing called ‘Pebble in my Pocket’ about the history of the earth. We have written sentences focusing on conjunctions, verbs and adverbs.

Reminders: PE on Wednesday (outside) & Thursday indoors (shorts and t-shirts will also be needed)

Year 4 String Scheme takes place every Friday, please ensure all instruments are in school.

YEAR 5 & YEAR 6

Year 5 and Year 6 had their wonderful WOW start immersing themselves into the lives of Vikings & Anglo-Saxons last week.

We experimented writing our names with Viking runes! Then the drama was supervised by Mrs Davey and involved much pillaging and raiding! Some of the shield designs were amazing and we honed our research skills when finding facts from reference books!

REMINDER: P.E. days for Year 5 is Tuesday and Wednesday and Year 6 is Tuesday & Thursday.
