MESSAGE FROM MRS COLLINS

Coronation of King Charles III!

At Sandfield, we will all be celebrating the forthcoming Coronation of our new King Charles III on Friday 5th May 2023!

The Junior Leadership Team (JLT) will be helping to plan the day, which includes a street party whole school lunch with a special menu designed by Aspens.

To make this day extra special, we are asking all children to nominate a dad, mum, grandparent, uncle, aunt etc. to be our male or female Sandfield King for the Day.  Each Year group will be making a special crown for their ‘King’ and from today pupils will be able to put their choice on a slip and put it in the ballot box, all available from the office.

Nominations close on Thursday 20th April 2023 and the Kings for the Day will be chosen in Celebration Assembly on the morning of Friday 21st April 2023.  The lucky chosen people will spend lunchtime in school from 12 noon until 1:30pm and get thoroughly spoilt!

Good luck!

Reading Texts

At Sandfield, we are exceptionally proud of our curriculum and how it inspires all children to become confident and enthusiastic writers.

Writing is a subject that can put large demands on such young children but our curriculum here at Sandfield ensures success for all. We have achieved this by carefully considering the texts that are the absolute best in promoting a love of writing. Our texts are challenging, tackle difficult themes and issues and represent a diverse range of multi-cultural backgrounds.

Children at Sandfield are motivated by these rich texts and we are proud of the writers they are becoming. Below, you will find the texts we use across the school from EYFS to Year 6 for both cycles. I’m sure you will agree that this is an exceptional literacy journey for our children and who knows we might have the next Emma Carroll or J K Rowling in our midsts!

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOMS

RECEPTION CLASS

What fun 4 day week in Reception!

To commemorate International Women’s Day this week, we had lots of circle time discussions about what it means to be a boy or girl. We discussed stereotypes and challenged our prior thinking about ‘boy’ things and ‘girl’ things. We’ve come to realisation that everyone can do anything they work hard to do, no matter their gender. We read about the lives of some incredible women who have helped shaped our country and the girls and women who are actively doing things now to make a better future for us.

We read about our late Queen and looked at her life. We read about her journey from a little girl to becoming the longest reigning monarch in the world! We read the funny story of The Queen’s Knickers then designed our own pair drawing inspiration from the book. We also wrote invitations to the Queen’s birthday party using our sounds. Many of us tried hard to write these independently.

Our imagination ran wild in our small world area where we role-played knights and dragons in the little castle! In art, we used lots of recyclable material to create all sorts of new things from boats with wings to intricate multi-story buildings!

YEAR 1 & YEAR 2

This week in Science, Year 1 have been busy identifying a variety of leaves and sorting them out according to different criteria – size, shape, colour, evergreen or deciduous. We have also carried out an investigation about how many prickles on a holly leaf and we found out that the most common number was 17 prickles on a single holly leaf! We also realised how prickly those holly leaves are – no wonder the animals don’t want to eat them!

Year 2 have been working two researchers from the University of Surrey. They are exploring the relationship between Lego and mathematics and whether Lego construction supports children’s development in maths. The children are having a fantastic time and building objects such as alien food. How exciting! Both of our wonderful researchers have complimented the behaviour of the children at Sandfield and how super they have been. We are so proud of them and look forward to sharing some of the results with you soon.

REMINDER: P.E days for Year 1 is  Monday and Year 2 is Tuesday.

YEAR 3 & YEAR 4

In Science, we have been investigating how much sugar there is in cans of fizzy drinks and looking at why the cans with zero sugar are actually lighter than those without. The children enjoyed this hands on experiment and were shocked that 11 teaspoons of sugar were in just one can!

Year 3 and 4 have been impressing us with some fantastic letter writing this week and are excited to be addressing envelopes and posting their letters. They have worked really hard and produced some wonderful work.

Reminders: PE on Wednesday (outside) & Thursday indoors (shorts and t-shirts will also be needed)

Year 4 String Scheme takes place every Friday, please ensure all instruments are in school.

YEAR 5 & YEAR 6

Year 5 and Year 6 had great fun in PE learning how to ‘ dodge ‘ and improve  their passing skills in netball. Fantastic team work using collaboration, communication and tactical thinking. We look forward to seeing these skills being used in their netball games in PE next week.  Even the freezing conditions didn’t dampen their enthusiasm…

The children representing Sandfield in the Guildford Music Festival have been practising their songs again this week and they sound amazing.  We look forward to seeing them perform with the other schools later this month.

Well done everyone – another great week!

REMINDER: P.E. days for Year 5 is Tuesday and Wednesday and Year 6 is Tuesday & Thursday.
