MESSAGE FROM MRS COLLINS

Christmas has arrived at Sandfield.

A big thank you to those children that helped choose our Christmas tree.  It was a team challenge, walking it back to school.   Many thanks to Waitrose for letting us have such a beautiful tree.

This morning the whole school enjoyed watching the KS1 Nativity!  The children were amazing; they sang, danced and said their lines with such confidence. We are all so proud of you.

Many thanks to all the KS1 staff who have worked so hard to put this performance together and to all the parents who supplied such lovely costumes. I know the children will really enjoy performing it again next week to their parents.

Green Wall Project

I am extremely pleased to let you all know that Sandfield, working in partnership with GCARE (The Global Centre for Clean Air Research) at the University of Surrey, has been successful in its grant application to build the Green Wall around the perimeter of Sandfield. We now have funding to start planning this exciting project.

The application was successful because it focuses on education, health and the environment.  The Eco Team and all Sandfield pupils will be involved, learning about the impact of air pollution, looking at live data and researching suitable plants for our living wall.  Every child in the school will plant a section of this wall and Sandfield will be a case study and exemplar for other educational institutions, which are situated in busy urban areas.

Wishing you all a good weekend and hopefully see you at our Winter Fair on Saturday!

Best wishes

Mrs Collins and the Sandfield Team

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOMS

RECEPTION CLASS

Christmas preparations are in full swing in Reception this week. On Monday, children walked into a Christmas pine – just like the one we read about at Trafalgar Square from Norway! Our Santa’s workshop was open and the children (or should I say elves and Santas) got busy wrapping presents, designing toys and writing lists! They wrote Christmas cards for their friends and family, then posted them in our letter box.

In honour of World Cup Football, the children practiced phonics penalty shootouts! They read the words on the ‘ball’ then shot them into the goal with a finger flick. They had the best time with this game, even Santa and his elves got involved in reading and shooting.

A lot of the week was spent rehearsing for our Nativity! We spent time in the hall singing and dancing then practiced changing in and out of our costumes in class. We are all very excited for our first-ever performance starting next week!

If you missed the EYFS meeting for Reception Class, please click here to see the PowerPoint from Mrs Phillpot.

REMINDER: P.E days for Reception Class is Friday.

YEAR 1 & YEAR 2

We have had another very busy week in KS1 as we head towards the end of term.
In Year 2, in our maths lessons, we have been learning all about 3D shapes. This week we have been focusing on counting edges and vertices of different 3D shapes.
In Year 1, our Science topic is animal diets and we learned about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.  We then used plasticine to model the different animals and the food that they eat.

Reminder: PE days for Year 1 is Monday and Year 2 is Tuesday.

YEAR 3 & YEAR 4

A busy, busy week in Year 3 and Year 4 as we head towards the end of term.

They are writing their own Indian story and worked so creatively on an expanded noun phrase game to help their descriptive writing skills – ask your child to explain what that is! Some very imaginative ideas and beautiful presentation.

Their creativity skills were also used to design and sew their purses in DT. The children copied Indian designs to make their patterns and shapes. They are looking very impressive!

Well done to all of you.

Reminders: PE on Wednesday (outside) & Thursday indoors (shorts and t-shirts will also be needed)

Year 4 String Scheme takes place every Friday, please ensure all instruments are in school.

YEAR 5 & YEAR 6

Year 5 and Year 6 have been working on planets and outer space this half term!  This week was planetary speed dating!

Each pair looked at information about specific planets and built up their own bank of facts to then take back to their tables.  They rotated round each planet and Mrs Grant even had a little timer with a bell!  We also tested how much they had retained by doing a lovely little kahoot quiz.

REMINDER: P.E. days for Year 5 is Tuesday and Wednesday and Year 6 is Tuesday & Thursday.
