MESSAGE FROM MRS COLLINS

District Sports Success – 3rd place – 64 Medals Won!

Our KS2 District Sports Squad did us proud on Wednesday.

They showed so many of our Sandfield values; self-belief, resilience and great teamwork.  Whether it was throwing, jumping or running, every child did their best and every point counted to our total.   This is the first time in Sandfield’s history that the team has come third out of seven schools.  It is a remarkable achievement, as we are the only one form entry school that enters and the only school without a field to practice on.

This success is due to our sports strategy, which is now in its fourth year. Our staggered lunchtimes allow for 15 different sports squads to operate across the school for all year groups. These are taught by our S4Ks coaches.  Every child has the opportunity to access these squads and develop their skills.  A big thank you must go to Coach Mohammed, who has been amazing at leading the coaching and inspiring the team.  Coach Mohammed moves on to a career in the world of finance and we will all miss him very much next year. The District Sports success is for you!

Transition – Moving On

Today we sent out a letter to all parents and carers to let them know who will be teaching their children next year.  There is a four week transition programme in place, as we recognise the importance of building positive relationships between children, parents and all adults in school.

Goodbyes

Mrs Mason is Retiring!

We say goodbye at the end of the academic year to Mrs Mason, who is leaving Sandfield after ten years of service to the school.

We thank Mrs Mason for all her hard work and commitment to all the children she has taught.  Mrs Mason has been our champion for our EAL families and she always ensures that these children and their families get the support and resources they need. We wish Mrs Mason all the best for her retirement and she will now be able to book a well-earned holiday in September!  Thank you again.

Mrs Fish

Mrs Fish has decided not to return to Sandfield in September following her maternity leave.  We wish her and her family all the very best, as she enjoys this special family time.

School Uniform Next Week

The temperatures are beginning to cool, so we are all back to school uniform next week, unless you have PE.  Year 6 are very welcome to wear their Year 6 hoodies.

We are looking forward to seeing many of you on Saturday for Sandfest 2023!  It will be a great day – so get your dancing shoes on!

Wishing you all a lovely weekend and see you tomorrow!

Best wishes
Mrs Collins and The Sandfield Team

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOMS

RECEPTION CLASS

This week we have dove right into our pirates and mermaid topics.

The children have thrown themselves straight into the sea of weird, wild and wonderful pirates. In English, they each created their own pirates, labelled and wrote about them. They even made their own pirate portraits complete with unique pirate names! Many enjoyed making old treasure maps by ripping and tea-staining their maps after drawing and labelling with amazing features!

YEAR 1 & YEAR 2

This week in Maths, in Year 2, we have started looking at position.

We enjoyed working in pairs, one created a plan and then the other had to use the cubes to make the shape as directed using the language of left, right, above and below. In Year 1, we have been using our science knowledge about materials and carried out an investigation to decide which will be the best material to use and build our paddle boat. Making our boats was great fun and now we can’t wait to try them in water!

REMINDER: P.E days for Year 1 is  Monday and Year 2 is Tuesday.

YEAR 3 & YEAR 4

We’ve had another busy week both inside and out of the classroom.

The children had great fun investigating viscosity of liquids using water, glue and brown sauce! Which liquid won the race and why?! In preparation for our Roman Day next week, we have designed and made shields ready for battle!

Reminders: PE on Wednesday (outside) & Thursday indoors (shorts and t-shirts will also be needed)

Year 4 String Scheme takes place every Friday, please ensure all instruments are in school.

YEAR 5 & Year 6

Year 5 have continued to enjoy reading Floodland to inspire their writing. We have explored the character Dooby and used ‘ hot seating ‘ to ensure we really understand how he thinks and behaves. Some fabulous sentences using relative clauses have been written which will be used in our narrative backstories next week.

In geography, the children have started to create some detailed double-page spreads to explain the features of a river and what is typical at the upper, middle and lower course. I’ve been so impressed with their enthusiasm, creativity and use of geographical vocabulary – another brilliant week everyone!

Year 6 are in full production mode at Sandfield Theatre!  The backdrops are up and the stage has been put together by Mr Osmand!  All we need now is a willing cast of children to sing the songs and bust the grooves!  The children are learning lines and creating comic timing with some classic sketches as I type and Mrs Davey is entirely in her element!  See you at opening night!
