MESSAGE FROM MRS COLLINS

Sandfest 2023!

Last Saturday saw Sandfield rocking to the sound of “Riot Weekend,” at our annual Sandfest festival.  It was a fantastic event with over 150 tickets sold.  It was great to see so many families enjoying the sunshine, enjoying the music and enjoying being with each other.

A big thank you must go to our office team – Helen, Lindsey and Thabie for helping organise everything from a school perspective. Also to Helen’s son, Tom, who coordinated the event, getting on board with 1997 Events Management Company, which provided the massive sound system and tech for the afternoon.   The band were amazing and even learnt special rock versions of family favourite songs: Moana, Do you want to build a snowman and Scooby-Doo!

Special thanks to the PTA who stepped up to organise the afternoon activities.  Mel, Charlotte, Alexandra, Ashley, Idil, Esmat, Niamh and Emma.  We are so grateful for all your hard work and for the time you gave so generously to make the event the success it was.  Also to all the parents and carers who got involved to run the BBQ, the bar, international food stall, teas and coffees.  We gratefully appreciate your support.

Finally to our wider school community who came along and supported the event.  It was great to see you all, especially our new families. Together you raised over £3000 for Sandfield future projects.  We will bring you the final figure when we have it.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend!

Best wishes
Mrs Collins and The Sandfield Team

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOMS

RECEPTION CLASS

This week, transition was in full swing as our current Reception spent two mornings in the new classrooms in Year 1. They were brave, respectful and resilient as they seamlessly went along to lessons with Mrs Payne and the team.

Whilst in our class, the children used their creativity and excellent fine motor skills to build 3D structures using marshmallows and toothpicks. They worked individually and together, challenged each other as they built and named the 2D and 3D shapes within their constructions. In English, the children used pirate telescopes to look at island scenes and used their best independent efforts to write their own description.

In maths, children got stuck into gooey blue slime to fish and work out doubles!

YEAR 1 & YEAR 2

We have had another fabulous week in KS1.

We had a visit from Divergent Drama for a Titanic themed day which the children all enjoyed. On Monday we all went to RGS for a mini sports afternoon and we have some budding athletes in KS1!

REMINDER: P.E days for Year 1 is  Monday and Year 2 is Tuesday.

YEAR 3 & YEAR 4

We time-travelled this week to immerse ourselves in all things Roman!

Years 3 and 4 have been learning all about the Roman army and Roman Britain in their English writing as well as in History, Art and DT. The children had a fantastic day with our Roman guide who told us all about the Empire, invasions and weapons!

They created a ‘testudo’ (tortoise formation) with the shields (scuta) that they had made and the shields were tested with a barrage of foam javelins. The children saw Roman artefacts and played some Roman games. They swore their oaths of allegiance and acted out marching and javelin training. It was an action-packed day which they will hopefully remember!

Reminders: PE on Wednesday (outside) & Thursday indoors (shorts and t-shirts will also be needed)

Year 4 String Scheme – please ensure all instruments are in school on MONDAY!

YEAR 5 & Year 6

Year 5 have enjoyed an amazing morning kayaking on the River Wey as part of our unit on rivers.

It was such a fun filled activity in the sunshine where so many Sandfield skills were shown – communication, problem solving, resilience and collaboration. Everyone worked well as a team learning new skills and supporting each other. Fortunately, not too many soggy feet on the way back either…

I think everyone will sleep well tonight!

Year 6 have been working with Surrey University over the last 6 weeks to prepare for secondary school.  There have been maths, English, Science and reading challenges that the children have really enjoyed.  The last one involved experimenting with the different properties of liquids and seeing what happened when they were gradually mixed.  We wore lab coats and it looked like the children were proper scientists in a lab!

REMINDER: P.E. days for Year 5 is Tuesday and Wednesday and Year 6 is Tuesday & Thursday.

SWIMMING LESSONS for Year 5 & Year 6 is every Thursday morning from Thursday 08/06/2023 to Thursday 13/07/2023
