MESSAGE FROM MRS COLLINS

WORLD BOOK DAY 2nd March 2023!

Next Thursday 2nd March, Sandfield will be celebrating World Book Day!
World Book Day is an opportunity to focus on reading for pleasure, supporting children’s book choices and embedding a habit of reading that will bring a wealth of wider benefits. It also welcomes children into the world of books by becoming book owners and supporting them in their journey in becoming life long readers. All children will receive a £1 book token in exchange for a free book from their nearest bookseller. Some of the titles include:

To promote the importance of bedtime reading, we would like the children to come into school in their pyjamas for the day. The children can wear a dressing gown and bring in a cuddly teddy too. We would advise all children to wear trainers rather than slippers.

Within school, each class teacher will be reading a selection of stories from a range of different cultures. If your child would like to bring in a favourite picture book or story from home which is from another culture, we would love to share these with the children.

Wishing you all a great weekend!

Best wishes
Mrs Collins and The Sandfield Team

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOMS

RECEPTION CLASS

First week back has been fantastic in Reception! The children came in full of energy, excited to see their friends and teachers.

We started our Ticket to Ride topic with a London theme. For maths, they built and compared towers and explored number bonds to 10 using London buses to help. They role played life at Buckingham palace in our small world area and built London landmarks in the construction zone.

The children eagerly put on knights, kings, queens and dragon costumes and stormed our castle role-play.

The highlight of the week was of course Pancake Day! The children followed recipes to make their own ‘batter’ in class then made and enjoyed real pancakes today. On Shrove Tuesday, we challenged Year 1 to a pancake-flipping race – an amazing start to the new half term!

YEAR 1 & YEAR 2

A fantastic first week back after half term.

The children have been very engaged in learning all about our new topic, Big Cats. This week we have been focusing on cheetahs and learning lots of fabulous facts about their appearance and how quickly they can move and hunt.

We have started writing our non-chronological reports all about “Charismatic Cheetahs!”

REMINDER: P.E days for Year 1 is  Monday and Year 2 is Tuesday.

YEAR 3 & YEAR 4

Year 3 and 4 have come back after half-term full of energy and ready to learn!

We have been thinking about a trip to Iceland and what we might see or do there.

The children have been composing a postcard to a friend about a trip using informal language and the next step is to write a letter about a trip to Iceland. We have been whale watching, visiting geysers and hunting the Northern Lights!

Reminders: PE on Wednesday (outside) & Thursday indoors (shorts and t-shirts will also be needed)

Year 4 String Scheme takes place every Friday, please ensure all instruments are in school.

YEAR 5 & YEAR 6

What a busy week back!

Year 5 and Year 6 have been continuing with our Viking topic.

In English we been writing superb sentences using expanded noun phrases and fronted adverbials that we will use in our narratives next week.

We have explored Viking invasions in History, looking at the famous invasion at Lindisfarne and discussing why we think the Vikings chose to invade here. Some really mature discussions took place around this topic.

In maths, Year 6 have enjoyed investigating the  area of shapes and Year 5 have been learning how to multiply fractions with integers. Mrs Grant’s Boot Camp gave us another fun fitness challenge in PE too!

A great start back everyone.

REMINDER: P.E. days for Year 5 is Tuesday and Wednesday and Year 6 is Tuesday & Thursday.
