MESSAGE FROM MRS COLLINS

Introducing our new provider for Sports Squads, After School Club and Holiday Clubs at Sandfield
In September 2023 we are embarking on a new partnership with Planet Soccer. This is an exciting time for us as we endeavour to make our sports offer and wrap around care even better.
The rational for changing providers is due to the need to have consistent staff working with the children in our lunchtime sports squads and looking after the children in home club and holiday clubs. Consistency of staff is key to ensure consistency of care for all.
We would like to offer you an opportunity to meet the new team working with your children. There will be a short presentation, but lots of time to ask any questions and get to know them. We will send out a flyer with all the details following this event.

Congratulations Olwen!
Olwen in Year 6 has been awarded winner of the Junior Citizen’s picture competition. The Junior Citizen Programme is a Year 6 national initiative, to help them stay safe in the wider world. Her design encapsulated her learning from the mornings activities.
Olwen is the proud recipient of vouchers and a photographer is coming to take her photo for next year Junior Citizen Programme. How amazing – well done Olwen!

Wishing you all a lovely weekend!
Best wishes

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOMS
RECEPTION CLASS
Another busy and fun-filled week in Reception!
The children tested different materials to see which ones would make a suitable waterproof tail for a mermaid in trouble! Each child made themselves into mermaids/ mermen and created a background scene using inspiration from seaside photos.
In maths, they practiced subtraction and writing number sentences as they fed hungry, great white sharks!
YEAR 1 & YEAR 2
We have had another fabulous week in Key Stage 1.
Year 1 had a fantastic trip to Guildford Library, where the children listened to different stories and they learned how to use the library. It is such a fantastic resource and encourages children to develop a lifelong enjoyment of reading so please do investigate it during the holidays and try to sign up.
In Year 2 we have had lots of fun learning about position and direction in Maths and enjoyed creating routes for different animals.
REMINDER: P.E days for Year 1 is Monday and Year 2 is Tuesday.
YEAR 3 & YEAR 4
We’ve had another exciting and busy week in Lower Key Stage 2!
Year 4 performed in a strings concert at RGS on Monday. They should all be very proud of learning to play the violin and being able to read music.
It was a treat for both classes to visit the library and find out how the librarians do their job. We enjoyed having the chance to look at such a wide range of books.
Our favourite bit of learning this week has been investigating bridges in DT – this week’s challenge was to make the longest bridge we could from only one piece of paper. We were not allowed to use any glue or sellotape so it was harder than it sounds. The most sturdy bridges had concertina folds to make little triangles and the longest bridge spanned approximately 29cm. Why not have a go at home?
Reminders: PE on Wednesday (outside) & Thursday indoors (shorts and t-shirts will also be needed)
Year 4 String Scheme – please ensure all instruments are in school on MONDAY!
YEAR 5 & Year 6
Year 5 have been ‘scientists’ this week looking at the impact of Sandfield’s new Green Wall on pollution levels.
We had a brilliant morning with some fascinating visitors (Charlotte and Abhijith) from Surrey University who are playing a key role in the project. They explained what equipment is being used in the school grounds to monitor our pollution levels before and after the Green Wall construction. Year 5 then used the iNATURALIST app on their ipads to research and name the plants, animals and insects that could be found in the school grounds. The data we gathered will then be compared in October to see whether the Green Wall has created higher numbers or more variety of plant and insect species.
Everyone had great fun exploring, researching and improving our knowledge of the species that share our playground with us.
Curtain up is coming in Year 6!
The songs have been sung a thousand times and your children are doing a grand job with the beast that is the production! Costumes are in and there are some stunners! Mrs Davey seems to be enjoying herself too…..!
REMINDER: P.E. days for Year 5 is Tuesday and Wednesday and Year 6 is Tuesday & Thursday.
SWIMMING LESSONS for Year 5 & Year 6 is every Thursday morning from Thursday 08/06/2023 to Thursday 13/07/2023
